A recent BBC article describes increasing cases of food allergies in children. It is thought that food allergy sensitization can occur through the skin. The article reports that infants with eczema are six times more likely to have an egg allergy and 11 times more likely to have a peanut allergy by 12 months than infants without eczema.

Research is demonstrating that early introduction of allergenic foods can help prevent food allergies. One of the key study was the Learning Early About Peanut Allergy (LEAP Study). The LEAP study found that regular peanut consumption reduced the prevalence of peanut allergy at five years of age by a remarkable 81%. By the time they were five, just 3.2% of the consumption group had developed a peanut allergy, compared to 17.2% in the avoidance group.

Due to busy schedules, parents may find difficulty in preparing and introducing allergenic foods to their children to prevent food allergy. SEMUA is a convenient way to introduce all these foods to children during complementary feeding.
